Joint Statement Shows Increased Support for Green Contracts to Decarbonise Buildings with Renewable Gases

Eurogas and nine other organisations at the forefront of the energy transition in the heating and power industries have signed a joint statement calling on the European Commission to implement green contracts to decarbonise these sectors.
As in our previous request to the Commission, these green contracts are those which offer to end consumers the possibility to consumer renewable instead of non-renewable energy, and are accompanied by Guarantees of Origin and/or Proof of Sustainability, which evidence their renewable character.
These contracts are already being deployed on the national level and are a reliable tool for ensuring that renewable gases like biomethane can be adequately accounted for in buildings.
Why are green contracts needed? In most cases, because methane and biomethane are so chemically similar, these contracts are the only way for end users to prove that they are consuming biomethane. Various EU legal acts - such as the RED, ETS, and EPBD - require consumers to prove that they are using renewable energy, which they can do with green contracts.
