Urgent Need for Regulatory Clarity in Methane Emissions Regulation to Safeguard EU Supply Security: Letter to Institutions

Eurogas, along with 18 other organisations at the forefront of the energy transition, sent a joint letter to the European Commission and Council of the EU regarding the Methane Emissions Regulation.

This legislation is an important and first-of-its-kind step in aligning climate ambitions with global energy trade. We support in principle the EU's willingness to enhance transparency with regards to imports of fossil energy and contribute to the wider uptake of methane emission mitigation solutions across the globe.

However, achieving this goal requires a framework that is both effective and practical to ensure it strikes the right balance between environmental effectiveness, competitiveness, and workable reporting obligations.

The Regulation’s timeline, uncertainties and extraterritorial implications create significant challenges for the flexibility and security of the EU’s gas supply, particularly as the EU seeks to ensure affordability and contract additional natural gas supplies to replace Russian gas imports.

To mitigate these risks, we strongly recommend conducting a thorough impact assessment of the importer requirements, focusing on key criteria such as workability, environmental effectiveness, and competitiveness.
