Navigating Towards 2040: The Critical Role of the LNG Industry in Achieving the EU’s Climate Targets

Read the full report here.

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) will continue to play a pivotal role as Europe accelerates its transition to a secure, competitive and climate-neutral energy system, according to the LNG Protocol's newly released report on the topic.

The LNG Protocol, of which Eurogas is a member, is an informal communication platform of organisations that together drive the LNG industry forward. We have jointly produced this report to highlight LNG's contributions and argue for a multi-molecule approach to energy policy.

In the report, we outline eight areas of policy recommendations for improving Europe's capacity to meet its 2040 climate goals by using LNG:

  1. Enhance confidence in the EU LNG market
  2. Enable LNG importers' compliance with the EU Methane Regulation
  3. Align national and EU legislation on the role of LNG terminals
  4. Enable gases to contribute to emission reductions in the EU ETS sectors
  5. Remove barriers to trade for biomethane
  6. Facilitate emission reductions in the shipping sector
  7. Support road transport decarbonisation
  8. Integrate LNG data reporting
