Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage should be fast-tracked in the EU-UK Emission Trading System linkage discussions

Eurogas joined 55 other organisations across the EU and UK to call on the Commission and British Government to include Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) and permanent Carbon Dioxide Removals (CDR) in ongoing discussions towards the linkage of the EU and UK Emission Trading Systems (ETS).

Negotiations on the recognition of cross-border CO₂ transport and storage must advance as quickly as possible to ensure both the EU and UK meet their 2030 climate targets, and industrial actors can have the clarity, predictability, and security they need to enable making important investments towards decarbonising.

To this end, this joint initiative calls for the creation of a Working Group to focus on CCUS under the Trade and Cooperation Agreement's Specialised Committee on Energy to ensure efficient and comprehensive collaboration on matters relating to CCUS and permanent CDR.

This is the opportune moment for the creation of such a Working Group, as the EU and UK begin working on the linkage of their respective ETSs, and would allow for cross-border CO₂ trade to progress in parallel, accelerating the timeline for developing cross-border CCUS projects that benefit both parties.
