Jonathan Stern
Jonathan Stern founded the OIES Gas Research Programme in 2003 and became a Distinguished Fellow in October 2016. He is honorary professor at the Centre for Energy, Petroleum & Mineral Law & Policy, University of Dundee and a Distinguished Research Fellow of the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (in Tokyo). From 2022-24, he was a member of the Greenhouse Gases Life Cycle Assessment for Natural Gas and Liquefied Natural Gas Task Force, US National Petroleum Council (NPC) Study, Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from the U.S. Natural Gas Supply Chain. He is the author and editor of several books, including: The Pricing of Internationally Traded Gas (2012) and The Future of Gas in the Gulf: continuity and change (2019). Papers published by OIES include: Methane Emissions from Natural Gas and LNG Imports: an increasingly urgent issue for the future of gas in Europe; Measurement, Reporting, and Verification of Methane Emissions from Natural Gas and LNG Trade: creating transparent and credible frameworks; Greenhouse Gas Emissions from LNG Trade: from carbon neutral to GHG-verified and `Analysing the EU Methane Regulation: what is changing, for whom and by when?’ His latest paper published in April 2025 is: Measurement Reporting and Verification of Methane Emissions From the Gas and Oil Sector and Consequences for LNG Trade: a three year progress report.
